Preliminary Assignment 8 Conclusion (With Instructor Response)
Jennifer Corcoran
Conclusion:
Now think back to when you were a child in either elementary
school or even junior high.  What were your biggest fears?  Did you worry
about the clothes you wore or what style of hair cut you got? (COMMON
GROUND)  Sure, those are normal issues children worry about day to day.
But I bet that you did not worry about whether you would understand what
the teacher was saying or if you were correctly speaking English.  Miguel
faced all these issues daily, yet they went unnoticed.  If your child were
struggling in school for whatever reason, you would demand that something
be done and if your child's teacher could not do it, then maybe an outside
source such as CMI could help.  (COMMON GROUND)  I know that when I am
blessed enough to bring children into the world, they will get only the
best from me and I will be sure to demand that others treat them the same.
(SELF-DISCLOSURE)  CMI is only there to help-I don't want it to take over
my future profession of teaching nor do I want it to be an outlet for all
teachers to rely on.  CMI is only a back-up method.  It provides ESL
students with the extra help that a teacher is not able to provide them in
order to gain further knowledge of our language.  It also enables a
student to work alone until they master some basic skills and gain the
confidence that is needed in order to participate in the regular
classroom.  As teachers, we take an oath to teach, motivate, understand,
and integrate children into the classroom.  (MACHINE GUN)  Is Miguel any
different because he is Hispanic and does not speak perfect English? (RQ)
Is it me, but I thought segregation went out a long time ago? (PERSONAL
PRONOUN)  Shut the door to it, lock it out, help your students, use
outside help if needed, but don't, please don't, just give anyone the key
to open your door.  (ANALOGY)  Let technology help you, that is what it is
there for!
