2zero7 Journal

Directions:

1.  Write one entry for each team meeting.

2.  Identity the date, time, and duration of the meeting.

3.  Identity the goals of the meeting.

4.  Write a brief narrative of what happened at this meeting while also making at least two TBC's (textbook connections).  The purpose of the journal is not to keep a diary but rather to connect concepts and processes in the textbook to the lived experience of your team across the semester.

5.  Read the sample entries from  previous "Official 2zero7 Journals.

Journal Question 1 - Journal Question of the Week

What are you impressions of each of your team members?  Write a detailed description of the first impressions of each of your team members.


Journal Question #2 -Journal Question For The Week

From Cragan and Wright, Chapter 2
 
A.  Has your group experienced primary tension?  How was talk used strategically to buffer primary tension?
B.  Think about a project team you have been a member of.  Discuss your expereince in this team in terms of
the signposts for assessing the quality of small group communication

Leah Thompson in her book "Making the Team" argues that in building a team one must consider the task, the people, and the relationships among potential team members.  In analyzing the task she suggests a key question is what work needs to be done.  in analyzing potential members she suggest one ask who is ideally suited. to perform the task

 C.  Analyze the nature of your project in 2zero7.  What needs to be done?  What parts of the project may you be able to use your special talents to exert leadership?

 
D.  Assess your own ability along three dimensions, technical or functional expereince, task management skills, and interpersonal skills.  Make reference to prior "teams" you have been a member of.

Journal Question #3

Cragan and Wright discuss 20 core communication skills for problem-solving groups. On the "team midterm" you will have to be able to list and explain each of these skills.  This week, assess what are your five strongest skills and the five skills where you are most in need of enhancing your level of skill development.

Journal Question #4

In the next decade many of you will assume management positions.  One task of management is information management and building a shared knowledge base.  Discuss some of the strategies which you might use to build a shared knowledge based in your 2zero7 project team.
 


Journal Question # 5

1. Competence depends on knowledge, skill, and motivation. One important type of knowledge is
     self-knowledge. Assess your own needs for inclusion, affection and control in your personal and
     professional relationships.  Assess your own needs along the inclusion, control and affection
     continuum, Give evidence and example to support your claim. "I won't believe you, make me believe."


Journal Question # 6 

 Discuss the deviant personality behaviors often found in groups. Identify examples of these behaviors from your own 2zero7 team so far this semester or from previous project teams you have been a part of.

Read Cragan and Wright Ch. 5 Preparing for Group Problem Solving, 108-113

Evaluate the degree to which you are meeting the ethical commitments of team members.

Discuss the degree to which your teammates are meeting the ethical commitments of team members?


Journal Question #8

What are the bargaining/negotiation styles which can be used in response  to conflict situations.  What style is MOST representation of the way in which you communicate in situations where there is interpersonal conflict?


Journal Question #9  For the Week

Cragan and Wright identify skills which are needed to exert task, procedural leadership when working in a project team. (178-185)  Evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses in performing these leadership behavior in your 2zeroy7 project during the course of this semester.


Journal Question 10

Cragan and Wright suggest that the four signposts for assessing the quality of communication in a project team are: 1) the amount of understanding and agreement; 2)the formation of group roles; 3) the level of interpersonal trust and empathy, and 4) degree of group identification and pride (pp. 49-52)  Assess the quality of communication in your project team using these criteria.
