PIVOTAL TERMS IN THE STUDY OF COMMUNICATION

COMMUNICATION: A reciprocal process in which we construct and use impressions of the individuals and situations to construct verbal and nonverbal messages in an attempt to engage in effective and appropriate interaction with others in our social world.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: the process of constructing verbal and nonverbal messages for the purpose of promoting attention, comprehension and retention.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: the process of constructing verbal and nonverbal messages for the purpose(s) of establishing, building and maintaining, repairing, and terminating relationships with others.

BELIEF BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT-refers to the constructing or verbal and nonverbal messages for the purpose of gettingother to change, reinforce, or adopt new attitudes, beliefs, or behavior

EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT-the process of constructing verbal and nonverbal messages for the purpose improving or enhancing or modifying another persons emotional state.

IDENTITY/IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT-process by which one uses verbal and nonverbal messages to create an identity or impression for self or other through strategic self-presentation and altercasting.

SELF-MANAGEMENT-the process of constructing verbal and nonverbal messages directed toward the self, the constant internal dialogue we carry on with ourselves e.g. positive self-talk, imagining, wondering, prayer, self-reflection.

IDENTITY-refers to the way a person, product, or group is defined and regarded within a particular encounter or depicted by mediated messages. Different identities may be presented and called forth by the demands of different situation e.g. encounters with friends, supervisors, doctor's, your parents or "his" or "her" parents. co-workers, teachers, and so forth.

ALTERCASTING-the process of constructing message designed to place or cast another in a particular identity or attempt to create an identity for another, usually in the service of, or to advance communication goals..

SELF-PRESENTATION-the process of constructing verbal and nonverbal messages in an attempt to control one's own identity in a particular communication encounters usually to advance other instrumental and interpersonal goals.

COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE- the extent to which goals related to communication are effectively fulfilled through cooperative interaction appropriate to the demands of the persons and situations involved.

VISUAL LITERACY - the ability to reposition messages which are aimed at the senses and emotions within the domain of critical reasoning and thought.
