Youtube.com.

Youtube.com. This magnificent website was invented by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim in 2005. It was originally a small video sharing website which grew to great heights. It was named invention of the year in 2006 by Time Magazine. From this announcement, the traffic on this particular website grew rapidly. The main premise behind YouTube is participation. That is to say that without other people watching other videos, the website would not be as functional as it is now. One of the main virtues of YouTube, which keeps the reputation high, is that it only plays clips from partners if they have a direct relationship with the content partner. An example of a content partner is Adidas, various movie trailers, and even network shows. Big companies realized that they could get free advertising just by uploading a video about their company, or a commercial that has already run on television. The watch page on YouTube is where millions of people watch videos every day. That is more than any cable network, television network, or social network combined. People come to YouTube to be entertained, informed, and to browse. YouTube was said to be “the world’s largest magazine rack” by an advertiser strategist on YouTube, and I couldn’t agree more.

YouTube.com was invented by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jared Karim in 2005. It was originally a small video sharing website which grew into one of the main attractions on the internet. It was recognized and named invention of the year by Time Magazine. From this prestigious award, the infatuation of YouTube grew into what it is today. There are 100’s of millions of videos that are viewed on YouTube everyday around the world! With this being said, YouTube draws more traffic than any TV network, cable network, or social network combined. Some of the reasons why people go to YouTube are to be entertained, learn, or get inspired. If people go on YouTube to see sneezing panda, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzRH3iTQPrk , or to see what all the fuss is about with the numa-numa guy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60og9gwKh1o , they may wonder “How can this website possibly keep a positive reputation?” “There are some things that marketers and advertisers must get about Youtube”, said Suzie Reider, Director of Ad sales for YouTube she continued, “We only run ads on the content or video where we have a direct relationship with the content partner.”Not only does YouTube show a wide variety of entertainment material, It also shows informational videos as well. I think that it was put best by http://www.youtube.com/advertise when stated, “Think of YouTube as the world’s largest magazine rack, if it is of interest to somebody, it makes its way here.” Obviously this is a HUGE website already and with more and more videos being uploaded every day, it is still growing. With a production cost of around $1,000,000 per month, how does this website keep in business?. So what is the answer to make the money needed, would it be charging people to make an account on YouTube? This would cause a huge uproar. So the easy answer? … Advertising.

Advertising come in many forms on YouTube. The most basic form of Youtube advertisement is as standing ad that is located on the right hand side of the watch page. The watch page is where videos are viewed (above picture). In Video Ad – This is one of the fastest groing ways to advertise on YouTube. While watching a video, about 15 seconds into the video, an advertisement will pop up (on the bottom of the view box). If the viewer decides to click on it, they will be transported to that advertisement. Featured Unit – The featured unit appears on the top of the home screen of Youtube. This is a one day video placement that puts a particular video front and center for everyone in America to see if they go on YouTube. It is no wonder why advertisers pay big bucks for this spot.Community/Channel – This is a tab of YouTube where a company or artist or person can create a YouTube specifically for their company. With this option of advertising, promotions are not uncommon. This can also serve as a place for individuals who have the same enthusiasm for a specific item. One of the most popular things is making contests for people to send in their home videos for a particular item. The best example is the Pepto-Bismol channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/peptobismol . Having a channel also keeps a running tally of views, subscriptions, and comments.

As YouTube has evolved, It has sculpted the way people and businesses advertise themselves and others. One of my favorite quotes about YouTube was by Roto, from the band The Bad Eliots, “Once that 30-second TV commercial version of the song (Cat’s Meow) became really popular on YouTube and elsewhere, we all thought it would be a good idea to roll out the full version of the song” – Roto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHT5U4zNiqU&feature=related . and so they came up with this Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TycExCyXWSQ. Society has turned to YouTube for entertainment, information, and inspiration. Advertisement quickly followed suit and is now YouTube is one of the latest and greatest trends for advertising due to the overwhelming participation!
