Course Assignments  (Inoperative Spring 2005)

1. Exam. The exam will be held on Tuesday, March 30. It will be worth 250 points andlast one hour and 15 minutes exactly. The exam will cover material from the textbook, lectures, and discussions through chapter 12, "Technology." The format of the exam willbe mixed, consisting of multiple-choice, true/false, and short-essay questions. To theextent possible, the exam structure and items will emphasize key points, rather thanminutia, and a number of questions will call for personal reflection on course material. For example, a question or two may call for a comparison between two theories. This will be a closed-book exam.

2. Case Analysis Paper. This paper, worth 200 points, will be due on Thursday,February 26. This assignment calls for your informed and thoughtful application ofcourse concepts to a real-life case, from either your own direct experience (e.g., a job orproject or episode/encounter) or from other sources (such as news reports, a book, or adocumentary film). Cases discussed in the text and the class are not available forcompleting this assignment. The assignment emphasizes the linkage between theoryand practice and allows you to do a bit of organizational consulting on paper. The papershould be approximately 1,500words in length and should contain at least thesesections: a) introduction: background on the case; b) statement of rationale andpurpose: explaining why this case is useful to examine; c) identification of relevanttheories, concepts, or principles (three); d) analysis of the case based on the precedingideas; and e) practical conclusions relevant to this case and beyond. You are encouragedto draw upon the ideas about method in chapter 15 of your text, especially in terms ofanalyzing communication, and you should scan the documents on the website<www.organizationalcommunication.com> for other potentially relevant tools. Youshould use references cited in the text, but you may consult other relevant sources. There should be at least five academic references cited and used in the paper. EitherAPA or MLA reference style is acceptable. See the sample case analysis outline on theNASA-Columbia case and the sample student paper from last semester (on line).

3. Group Project and Presentation. This project, which has an oral and a writtencomponent, is also worth 150 points. This assignment allows for the more in-depthexploration of a topic of interest—such as networks, or globalization, or ethics—and willbring together a group of students who want to probe that topic together. A groupproject can be centered on a domain or a sector of organizations (like health care or callcenters), a specific concept and set of practices (like the servant model of leadership orgroup decision support systems), or a particular issue (such as the glass ceiling for women in corporations or homosexuality in sports organizations). Creative and unusual topics are encouraged; for example, "Communication in the ‘24/7’ business." Like allgroup work, you will be expected to organize your tasks effectively and accomplish morethan you would be able to do individually. The presentation will be 25 minutes long, plusfive minutes of Q&A. Group presentations will be held on April 20, 22, 27 and 30.Each group will produce a detailed three-page handout with key points, relevant facts, quotations, graphs, references, etc. At least 10 references should be used, though youmay consult popular material as well as scholarly resources. Examples of appropriatetopics include: Internet-based social-movement organizing, new developments in theconstruction and expression of corporate images/identities, and the relationship betweenorganizational culture and ethical practice. Groups should have 4-6 members.
